The city was again rebuilt during the Hellenistic and Roman period some distance away (where it enters into the New Testament in the form of Troas (see article on Troas/Dalyan Acts 16:8-11, the place of St. Meander was the most important symbol in. The city was rebuilt in a limited fashion and stood between 1200-1100 BC (Troy vi-b), but was eventually left abandoned until around 700 BC when a small village existed on the site. Meanders, named from the Menderes (historically known as the Maeander) River in Turkey, are most often formed in alluvial materials (stream-deposited sediments) and thus freely adjust their shapes and shift downstream according to the slope of the alluvial valley. The meander motif took its name from the river Meander, a river with many twists, mentioned by Homer in Iliad. Not deterred, the people of Troy rebuilt the city again ( Troy vi-a) which was later immortalized in Homer's Iliad and subsequently destroyed around 1200 BC. The city was rebuilt several times in the Bronze Age (Troy ii-vii), and was occasionally burned ( Troy ii), but seemed to reach its zenith in Troy vi which appears to have been destroyed by a massive earthquake in about 1300 BC. The Meander motif was inspired by the twisting and turning Meander River, mentioned by Homer in Iliad. A careful study of these levels reveals the city to have been founded around 3000 BC ( Troy i) and was destroyed by fire about five centuries later. An excavation undertaken by the University of Leicester has uncovered part of a dramatic mosaic with 3 panels each portraying a scene from the Siege of Troy as described in the Iliad.
Each river in the ancient world would have a Potamoi associated with it, and this river god would live and die with the life of the river.
Fawn Creek Township is in Montgomery County. Scamander was a Greek river god, a Potamoi, and therefore one of the 3000 sons of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys, and therefore Scamander was a brother of the 3000 Oceanids, the water nymphs. The outcome of the excavations was a view of the nine strata (archaeological levels) of the ancient city representing the history of the city's remains. A high status Roman villa has been discovered between Ketton and Luffenham, close to the River Chater, south of Rutland Water. Fawn Creek Township is located in Kansas with a population of 1,618. His work was continued after his death by two other Germans, Wilhelm Dorpfield and Carl Blegen, near the turn of the century. Archaeological digs began there in the early 1870's by German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, who maintained that the city was not simply a mythological city. In northwest Anatolia near the Aegean Sea lies the ancient city of Troy, known for centuries only in the pages of the Homer's lyric.
